Character Design – Draw it three times (at least)

Brent Noll and Maximus Pauson are artists working in the television animation industry, They have a really great youtube channel called BAM Animation that has taught me a TON of great things about character design, color theory, perspective, and movement. I highly recommend you devour all of their content. It’ll be worth it.

One thing that Max said during the coloring episode is that when you’re doing character design you want to draw the character at least three times, each time pushing the design further and further. Refining and simplifying it with each re-draw.

Since this new book is going to be aimed at younger audiences, I want it to give it a more animated style than my usual work. I think it works for graphic novels as much as it does for animation. So I’m leaning heavily on what Brent and Max have taught me.

I spent a week drawing and re-drawing Alan, Andrew and Val. Tweaking their design, trying to simplify things, and doing my best to make them seem like brand new characters while remaining instantly recognizable to people already familiar with Table Titans.

Here is a comparison of my first attempt at the characters and my final design.
